Couple Spend £18,000 On A Natural Swimming Pool
A married couple in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire have spent £18,000 and two years converting their back garden into a natural swimming pool, surrounded by over 1,500 plants.
The Daily Mail report that Caroline and Jon Edwards, aged 56 and 55, built their 45ft by 30ft, 7.5ft deep chemical and chlorine-free pool at their home after being inspired by a gardening DVD in 2018.
The natural swimming pool is complete with a sauna and decking, and the carefully considered plants that surround it help rainwater keep the pool clean.
Mrs Edwards, a singing director, said: “Jon hired a digger and started digging the lawn which is when I realised there was no going back - it took forever. I was sceptical at first but we managed to pull it off - it's absolutely gorgeous. We're in there most days and we have become the party house as everyone wants to use the pool.”
The couple diverted rainwater from the gutters into the pool, which took a long time to fill it, but means their maintenance costs remain very low.
Mrs Edwards added that the most costly part was buying the right plants for the pool as they needed to keep it naturally clean and that the couple regularly performs tests on the water to ensurer that it is safe to swim in.
According to his partner, Mr Edwards is a keen DIY enthusiast, and initially, she thought it was one of his 'crazy projects that would never get completed'.
Once the couple’s four children left to go to university, they decided it was time to do something new, and Mr Edwards’ vision came together in the end.
“The only problem is that now we can never move house! The journey we went on with this pool has been so special to us and it would be very difficult to leave it behind,” Mrs Edwards added.
