When Will Swimming Pools Reopen?
Lockdown restrictions around the UK are gradually being eased at the moment, with businesses starting to throw open their doors once again and people increasingly allowed to spend time with others, as long as social distancing measures are adhered to.
At the end of May, it was suggested that the nation’s swimming pools could be reopened from July, but with a series of changes implemented in order to help prevent the spread of coronavirus, iNews reports.
Apparently, these changes include having to arrive and leave in swimming costumes, while children will be banned from pools outside of swimming lessons. The number of lanes for swimming will be cut in half and those in the pool will need to maintain safe distances from others at all times. Diving will be banned.
Speaking to the Sunday Times, Jane Nickerson, chief executive of Swim England which came up with the proposals, explained that the use of changing rooms may well be discouraged in the early days so going “beach-ready” could be advisable.
It hasn’t been confirmed when pools will reopen but it’s believed that they will stay closed until July 4th at least, which is also when other hospitality businesses may start to reopen as well.
Looking at the world at large, swimming pools just started to reopen in Cyprus last week (June 5th), with Dr Petros Karayiannis - professor of microbiology and molecular virology at the University of Nicosia - telling the Cyprus News Agency that if strict protocols are followed, there is no risk of infection in pools.
